Amazing Ukulele Musicians!

Over the last few weeks, we've been busy learning how to play the Ukulele with Mrs Watling. We've played lots of musical games and learnt lots of fantastic songs. Some pupils have been so keen to learn, they've even bought their own ukuleles so they can practise at home!

Have a look at the video and our audio which really show off some of our super skills!

Because we're really proud of our musical talents, we're inviting parents to see a special ukulele concert on Monday 15th December at 2.30pm! We hope to see you there!

In Year 1 we created space pictures.  First we had fun flicking paint for a starry outer space and then we marbled paper for swirly planets.
Next week we'll post the finished pictures.

Spy Day in Year 3!

There was something unusual about Year 3 when they came in on Thursday morning....

We all came in super spy disguises for our spy day!

We spent the day taking part in lots of different missions. In the morning, we had to cross a crocodile infested river. We worked as a team to ensure that we didn't get eaten and we had to communicate clearly to each other.

We then had to build a shelter for the night. We had to use our problem solving skills to design a structure that would be strong and wouldn't let water in!

We also had lots of fun learning how to dodge the beams in the laser maze in the afternoon! Finally, we had to crack complex codes to find out how to open the mystery briefcases.

We were awarded with super certificates to confirm that we were all super spies!

The Fire Crew

Road Safety

With lots of children cycling and walking to school and around the local area, road safety is an important issue in Kings Copse. The Botley fire crew came in to Year Five and Six yesterday to do some workshops with the children, and remind them how important it is to stay safe on the roads.

First, the crew discussed who could be held accountable for a traffic accident, and the different hazards which could contribute.

We also learnt a lot about bike maintainance, which was really useful as so many of us enjoy riding our bikes!

And the winner is.....

Bag Test Result

Many of you have been waiting for the result from last weeks investigation.

If you are looking to reuse a bag, avoid the following:
Tesco
Sainsburys single use
Mothercare
New Look.

BHS performed well as did B&Q.

If it is pouring with rain and you only have a few things to carry, New Look will keep your shopping dry but it is likely to collapse under too much weight!

Well done if you guessed correctly!

Our advice - stock up on the reuseable bags that stores are offering at a small charge.  You will be able to gurantee a second use!

The History of Cinema

Making Moving Images!
As part of our 'Lights, Camera, Action' topic, Year Six have been investigating the history of cinema. We explored two different ways in which moving images were first created, and had a go at making some ourselves.

We all made a zoetrope (1832) which showed a series of moving images, and some of us created a phenakistoscope (1834) which showed a bird in a cage.
Each of these was a piece of machinery used to create early moving images in the form of peephole cinemas.  Zoetrops were small boxes that people could pay to view small movies of animals or different characters playing out scenes.  Lots of these machines were more about the illusion of moving images rather than actual film.

Fire Crew

Here come the fire crew!

This week we were visited by our local fire safety team.

They gave us loads of information and tips about staying safe on the roads.  This was really useful especially as we are confident cyclists after our visit from Bikeability.

We learnt how to check our bikes and how to be safe in the dark

We also participated in some role play and learnt the importance of staying safe in the car.  Many of us admitted that we can be distracting to the driver sometimes.  We have learnt all about why this can be dangerous.

The little red hen

Over the last few weeks we have been discovering our story telling talents as a class.
Last week was the story of the little red hen.
The children all enjoyed joining in re-telling the story, it was a joy to see how confident and quickly they developed this skill. I'm sure if you ask them you'll get a re-telling of the story with actions and voices at home.

The week included other activities linked to the story, making their own bread, using skills to follow the recipe and to think about what happens when we cook ingredients.
Writing shopping lists and recipe cards gave the children chance to think about what sounds they can hear when spelling tricky words.
