The Hot Air Balloon Debate

On Monday our teachers told us about a hot air balloon that was about to crash into the sea unless someone jumped out.
In the balloon was a police officer, mechanic, scientist, fireman, teacher, doctor, pilot and soldier.
We had to decide who we thought would be the best person to leave.

Who would you choose? And why?

We then split into groups to create our own persuasive arguments for one of the characters.
We worked well in groups to think about why our person should stay safely in the balloon.

On Tuesday we actually held the debate in class. We had to convince Mrs Stanley and Mrs Greenwood not to choose our character to leave the balloon. Some of us were very persuasive and good at asking questions to the other groups.

Here are some pictures of us during the debate:

Who was safe? And who had to swim to shore?

  1. Sounds fun and a very useful skill to learn. I hope they didn't suggest the teacher jumped out . Bens Mum

  2. Wow, what a hard choice! I would not know who to choose, they are all very important people. You all looked like you worked very hard as a team to present your arguments. What an exciting activity!

  5. This reminds me of very fond memories I have of 'lunchtime debating society' we had when I was 11years old at primary school. Mrs spurr

  6. Very interesting, Y4. However, I wouldn't have thrown anyone out of the balloon. Instead, I would have thrown the heavy gas bottles out and sat the teacher directly under the balloon. Teachers are generally full of hot air and so I'm sure the one in the balloon could have kept the balloon in flight until they reached land... only joking!

Well done to Mrs Stanley and Mrs Greenwood for coming up with a fun activity... and for blogging about it!
