Year 1 are computer programmers!

In our computing lessons this term we are learning all about using algorithms.

An algorithm is a list of rules to follow in order to solve a problem.

Algorithms need to have their steps in the right order and be very clear. Think about an algorithm for getting dressed in the morning. What if you put on your coat before your jumper? Your jumper would be on top of your coat and that would be silly! When you write an algorithm the order of the instructions is very important.

We took it in turns to pretend to be robots whilst our partner had to give us instructions to avoid the 'icebergs' on the ground. We quickly learnt that algorithms needed to be very clear as our robots could only do exactly what we had told them. We had to think carefully about direction and how far our robots needed to travel.

How do we programme our robots to recover from this crash?

We then took it in turns to develop our programming skills by using the Beebots. It was tricky at first but we soon got the hang of thinking about each step carefully and making sure we planned our routes.

Why not login to Purple Mash  (using the details in your reading diaries) and have a go at giving instructions using 2go. There are also lots of activities online that you could you try with the help of a grown up like https://www.playcodemonkey.com/
